Here's a story of a dumbass that needs coaching, counseling, and further training. So this guy was at the VDCA Wild Hare last weekend and was convinced that his 914-6 could beat Denis Moser's 1964 GTO. It was the 2nd qualifying session and the 914 driver waited to grid right behind Denis so he could follow him around. He ended up passing the GTO at the start of lap 2 and on that very lap set the car's lap record of 2:09.8 (previous was a 2:10.3). On lap 3 he tried to take it a little bit deeper here, a little bit faster there, and ended up in the weeds inside turn 9.

Now there were some at the track saying this guy was extra stupid for staying "on the gas" through the grass, but the video does prove that to be false and that he bled off something like 60mph. Looks like the car took an odd set and bounces two times coming off the curb at 7A (or 8 depending on your map) before being under control prior to taking to the grass.


I, er I mean he, had the car bounce like that in two other occasions in other right hand corners over the weekend so there seems to be something in the chassis that needs attention, maybe a soft RR shock.

This was my 5th time ever being 4-off since getting my SCCA license about 15 years ago :-(.

A plaisant 'langue dans la joue'...a-a-a...an amiable tongue-in-cheek confession, mon amour, of your impromptu suspension test. Your sin is forgiven, Go In Peace...AFTER, Monsieur, you replace those divots!

One strange phenominum is the "Red Mist" it usually shows up at the first morning practice at a Large event ( Mitty,Indy,Hawk etc). Winning practice seems very important,god forbid the timing sheet shows your 4 or 5 seconds off your pace after youve been away from you race car all winter!!!
It also seems to come out more in the groups with Big HP, Im now a Racer, I can afford 700 hp,let me scare myself and everyone around me!! So, Dont get sucked into the RED MIST, relax,warm up those cold tires,get back in the grove and bring your car back in one piece Sunday nite! Mike

A lot of us have taken that same "short cut" through the esses at VIR.

You did the right thing by heading straight and scrubbing speed.

Many folks try to cut back toward the track and that can take you back into following traffic, with dire results.

I took that same ride in a GT350 a number of years ago. It had more ground clearance than you do!

The only damage that it ended up with was MIA brake ducts. The ducts are slick fiberglass parts that mount to the control arms which were original Al Holbert parts. Fortunately they simply broke the mounting zipties and I was able to find them while walking the track that night and they didn't get hurt at all.

After a long inspection in pit lane I went back out to feel the car and built back up to within a half second of the previous best lap. I'm amazed that it didn't even need an alignment, especially knowing that rear toe is via a slip joint, not a threaded rod.

Frustratingly though, I can't figure out why I can't replicate this pace in a race. Through practice and qualifying I was easily able to run 2:10's and 2:11's depending on temperature (very cold morning). In quali 2 I ran two hot laps (one before and one after plowing the field) of 2:09.8 and 2:10.5. In the race my very best time was a 2:11.9, but all 9 other laps were low 2:12's (difference between best and worst lap was less than 1 second). This is basically the same as last year at the same event.

Well said Mike.
I like to look at my lap time progress over the weekend, especially after a long layoff with cold tires and a cold brain.
Practice is just that, find the line, hit the shifts, find the rhythm and watch the times drop over the weekend.

They had the SCCA Majors at VIR not long ago, I wanted to see what the track record were in the prod classes. Needless to sat slicks make a bug difference.

I have been just for fun comparing HP SCCA times, my old SCCA class to EP vintage times (my current class), and the SCCA HP are a little faster everywhere we go, than fast EP vintage times. The biggest difference in tires I see, is some places where on slick I could stay planted, now on the vintage tires I have to breath the throttle a bit, and they don't hook up as well on corner exit, overall I don't mind, I think it takes more talent to go fast with the lesser tires.
